The city of Saarbrücken in the southwest of Germany has almost 180,000 inhabitants. It had a metre-gauge tram network since 1890 which was shut down in 1965. In 1997, the Saarbahn was opened as a modern light rail system based on the tram-train concept. So the tramway - now standard gauge - returned to the city centre of Saarbrücken after 32 years. Outside of the city, the trams run on railway lines to Lebach and across the French border to Sarreguemines.

The Saarbahn is operated by the eponymous company → Saarbahn GmbH.
