The Italian capital (almost three million inhabitants) has a relatively small tramway network with a system length of some 40 kilometres. The Metro (Underground) network consists of three lines and operates on approx. 60 kilometres of route. Accordingly, the traffic problems in the town are high: While the metro runs in a high frequeny, but is highly overcrowded in the peak times, waiting times for trams and buses up to 30 minutes are not unusual.
