Hanover, the capital of the German federal state Lower Saxony with a population of more than 500,000 inhabitants, has a light rail network called "Stadtbahn" with a system length of more than 120 kilometres. While the Stadtbahn trains runs predominantly subsurface in the inner city, the routes outside the inner city as well as in the neighboring communities are arranged above ground, partly embedded in the roadway.
