Arad is situated in western Romania close to the border of Hungary. The city is home of some 150.000 inhabitants and is an important industrial centre.

The approx. 50 kilometres long, metre-gauge tramway network ist operated by → CTP Arad (Compania de Transport Public Arad). A special feature is the about 20 kilometres long interurban tramway route to Ghioroc with a tram only every two hours (the waiting time is partial over three hours at the weekend!). On this route a special fare applies (as of 2014: 7 lei per journey = almost 2 euros - this is quite expensive for Romanian conditions).
